I switched to braided line when I was tired of having my line break when pulling in big Stripers at Lake Powell. The diameter of 6 lb mono-filament but with the strength of 20 lb and no memory to cause snarls sold me. But I soon learned that the Stripers could see the braided line and wouldn't take the bait. Adding a fluorocarbon leader solved that problem, but getting a knot to hold proved difficult. I hated having a swivel between the braided line and the leader, because it left a long line from the tip of the pole to the lure that would swing out when casting, and was dangerous to others in the boat when rush casting into boils. The uni knot proved to be the solution - it could splice braided line to mono-filament without slipping. But it was difficult to tie. So I invented this tier, and with a little practice, I could splice two lines together very quickly. And the knot is so small that I can reel the lure clear to the tip, and cast safely with nothing swinging around others in the boat.
In fact it is so easy to tie the uni knot with this tier, that I now use it to tie on swivels for bubble-fly casting, to tie on lures and flies to mono-filament leader, and even to splice line together when I had to cut out a big snarl on my kids pole. The tiny knot casts as if it weren't there. Basically, I now reach for the tier whenever I have to tie a knot. It is just easier, faster, and more reliable.
